In shaded groves and forests dark, beneath The Lady’s silver gaze, the rhythm of the turning wheel keeps time. Its pulse, our drum; we heed the call. Drawn to the Ancient Ones, the ancient ways, our dance keeps time with all eternity.

Notes of a Priestess

Chapter 8

In Shaded Groves:

A Ritual for Every Sabbat

Celebration of the sabbats lies at the heart of our practice. As we know, they reflect the Wheel of the Year and exemplify attunement with natural cycles. In Chapter 2, we learned the names and dates of the sabbats. We have learned how to layer our correspondences and how to create sacred space. Here, you will find a ritual for each of the eight sabbats in Wicca. These rituals allow you to cast a pagan circle, which is the creation of sacred space to perform and contain magickal work. It differs from a Wiccan circle in that the intricacies of casting formal circle are a part of the Wiccan mysteries. As a High Priestess, I cannot divulge these aspects to the uninitiated. However, each rite is designed to provide you with a foundation that you can draw from and build upon. Each will work for the solitary practitioner, or can be adapted for a group. If you are working solitary, adjust the words provided so that they suit you. If you are working with a group, remember to adjust the tools needed for the group and adjust the wording and delegation of responsibilities to suit the needs and size of the group. For those interested in learning more about the mysteries, initiation, or becoming a member of the clergy, refer to the information on self-initiation and classes with Circle of the Silver Path at the end of Chapter 9.

Enter into ritual work in the proper frame of mind, because the goal of ritual is to shift our consciousness so that we are in touch with and nurturing the Higher Self. We want to move focus away from everyday concerns and awaken to the freedom of our spirituality. Cleanse and prepare yourself for ritual by using one of the ritual baths in Chapter 7. Remember, the baths can be modified to encompass showering. Of course there are times when we want to perform ritual, but our schedules don’t afford us all of the time we need. You don’t need to sacrifice ritual. Instead, become creative. If you only have time to splash cold water on your face, then do so. Perhaps you can use one of the suggestions provided in Chapter 4 to create a cleansing spritzer that you can use to refresh your face and body. Just remember that preparation of the self is the first step in spiritual attunement. We want to create and enter our sacred space, having washed away the weight of mundane concerns.

Your circle and magick gain power through the repetition and evolution of your practice. However, ritual is not an act of rote memorization. In this chapter, you will find worksheets where you can write your own consecrations and quarter calls.
